5 Procedures You May Never Have Heard of Before

There are different types of procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical procedures that are conducted by various surgeons. These procedures are aimed at either tackling underlying medical issues related to body parts or might sometimes be a solution to aesthetic concerns.

With the rise of technology new procedures have emerged and with others being not so popular, they all serve to treat various needs. Here are some procedures that you might never have of before that is slowly gaining popularity.

Heterotopic heart transplant

The normal heart transplant procedure is the one that involves a surgery where a patient whose heart is damaged is replaced with a healthy heart. The heart that is used to replace the damaged heart usually comes from a healthy donor who is compatible with the sick patient. But, this is not the case with the heterotopic heart transplant.

A heterotopic heart transplant procedure occurs when the patient’s body rejects the donor’s heart. The healthy donated heart from the donor is implanted on the right side of the recipient’s damaged heart. They are both surgically connected, ensuring that blood from the damaged heart can flow into the new heart and then the new heart can pump blood around the body. The patient ends up having both hearts in their body.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

The vagina is a very sensitive part of the woman’s body and its health can have both physiological and psychological effects. Vaginal rejuvenation is a nonsurgical, non-invasive procedure involving laser tightening of the vagina that enhances the sex of a woman as well as bladder control. By tightening the vaginal muscles and repairing soft tissues, the procedure is effective for the treatment of various gynecological problems. It also helps in post-delivery alterations.

Hemispherectomy

The brain, which is the main organ for the overall functioning of all other body parts needs to be healthy both physically and psychologically. It has been found that seizures can be treated using part of the brain. The procedure is called hemispherectomy. In hemispherectomy, the brain can either be partly or wholly removed from one of the hemispheres and used to treat neurological disorders that cause seizures in a part of the brain.

Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis

This is an uncommon procedure that involves the use of one body part to treat an ailment in another body part. The tooth is used to restore sight to a patient who is blind from irreversible damage to the cornea. The canine or premolar tooth of the patient is the one used in the procedure.

Rotationplasty

In rotationplasty, the ankle replaces the knee and is used as a knee joint. It’s mostly conducted in children suffering malignant bone tumors such as osteosarcoma where the tumor is first removed before the ankle is fitted.

The lower part of the femur, the knee, and the upper tibia is removed and then the lower part of the leg is rotated 180 degrees and attached to the thigh. The entire procedure involves the attachment of the foot in a backward direction and once the prosthesis is fitted it enables the ankle to function as the knee does.

There are other unknown procedures such as head transplants which are said to cure paralysis. But each of these procedures is not very common due to their severity and the risk of complications since they are very complex and involve delicate parts of the body.
